The Conference, taking place from 30 April to 2 May under the motto “Playing for a Greener Future,” is jointly organised by the IOC and the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Qatar, in close partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Representatives from the world of sport, industry, sponsors, the United Nations and NGOs will address issues related to environmental responsibility and sport in plenary and breakout sessions.

The IOC Sport and Environment Award is presented every two years to members of the Olympic Movement (individuals, groups or organisations) who are nominated by NOCs, International Federations or Continental Associations. This year, 43 candidatures were submitted, with one winner selected for each of the five continents:

Africa: 2010 FIFA World Cup Host City Cape Town
Americas: IX South American Games 2010 Host City Medellin
Asia: Japan Swimming Federation (JASF)
Europe: National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark
Oceania: National Olympic Committee of the Marshall Islands

A special award was given to the NOC of Qatar for its commitment to the environment and sustainable technology, including its goal of delivering zero-carbon, solar technology to cool its 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums and training sites. Click here to learn more about the winners and their projects.

IOC President Jacques Rogge, who gave an opening speech at the Conference, applauded the winners for their dedication to the environment while wishing the assembled delegation a successful three-day event. “Sport is a powerful tool for positive change,” President Rogge said. “Our task is to ensure we use that tool for the benefit of the planet we share. We owe that to ourselves and to the future generations who will inherit this earth. The winners here tonight have embraced this concept and are worthy recipients of the IOC Sport and Environment Award.”

Over the next two days, participants will discuss a range of environment-related topics, including how sport can contribute to the 2012 Rio +20 Earth Summit; ways to locally and globally implement the Olympic Movement’s Agenda 21; how to make sports events more sustainable; how sport can help achieve Goal 7 (environmental sustainability) of the United Nations Development Programme’s Millennium Development Goals; and the role of Olympians in promoting respect for the environment.

“It is a huge honour and a proud moment for the Qatar Olympic Committee to be co-hosting the 9th World Sport and Environment Conference,” said Qatar Olympic Committee General Secretary Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. “The IOC and UNEP have developed an influential Conference over recent years that has stimulated real discussion and provided thought-leadership to the global sports sector. I have no doubt that this will be the case at this year’s Conference.”

More than one billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, and the 2011 motto is “a Billion Acts of Green”. The goal is to register one billion actions of individuals and organisations that support sustainability in advance of the global Earth Summit in Rio in 2012 – known as Rio+20.

Rio+20 on the IOC’s agenda

Rio+20 will also be in the focus of this month’s IOC World Conference on Sport and the Environment, which will take place in Doha, Qatar, from 30 April to 2 May 2011. In the opening plenary session, with the theme “The Olympic Movement at the Heart of the Environmental Debate: Rio 1992 to Rio 2012 to Rio 2016”, IOC President Jacques Rogge, UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner and other high-profile speakers will address which role sport can play in the global Sustainable Development Agenda - be it through educational means, setting environmental standards in major sport events like the Olympic Games or partnerships. In another initiative, which is in line with the spirit of Earth Day 2011, conference participants will be asked to make their own environmental pledge to care for our planet on a Green Wall Banner.

Learn more about the Conference, programme and keynote speakers here.

Background information

With the London Olympic Games and the first winter edition of the Youth Olympic Games ahead in 2012, the strategy is to rally key players from governments, the UN family, NGOs, the business community and civil society to reflect on the contribution of sport at large and the Olympic Games in particular for a sustainable future. The visibility and appeal of sport and the Olympic Games can help advance the global sustainability agenda. The IOC’s road to the Rio+20 Conference in 2012 will also see a renewal of the sporting community’s political commitments in these fields and the strengthening of existing partnerships. The objective is to encourage synergies with government and other major entities to have the most positive impact possible.

Doha to host 2011 World Conference on Sport and Environment

The International Olympic Committee, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Qatar Olympic Committee, will hold the 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment from 30 April to 1 May 2011 in Doha, Qatar. Under the theme of “Playing for a Greener Future”, the Conference will assess the environmental success stories of the Olympic Movement; reflect on future challenges; and explore new opportunities of mainstreaming the environment in the world of sport.

Some of the questions to be discussed are: “How can the Olympic Movement contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals which also relate to environmental sustainability?”, “How can sporting role models convey environmental messages at national level?” and “Which inspiring solutions to global environmental issues can be offered by the world of sport?”.

A highlight will be the presentation of the 2011 IOC Sport and Environment Awards, which recognise outstanding initiatives in the field of sustainable sport and environment. The deadline for nominations is 31 January 2011. It will bring together representatives from the sports community, environmental organisations, universities, governments, intergovernmental organisations and the business world.

For a Green Sport

Like any activity, sport has an impact on the environment as well as being affected by it. Tomorrow’s 2010 World Environment Day, initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), provides a good opportunity to remember that sport and environment are deeply interlinked and need to be addressed jointly. Whilst the sports world can play an important role in safeguarding the environment, a degraded environment can have a negative impact on sport, the Olympic Games and, most importantly, the athletes. Accordingly, sport and the environment have become a full-time activity area, with initiatives and projects implemented worldwide.

Environment at the top of the agenda

Since 1996, the environment has been the third “pillar” of Olympism, after sport and culture. This philosophy has been brought to life by many actions and programmes during and beyond the Games, and by the various stakeholders of the Olympic Movement, such as the Olympic Games Organising Committees (OCOGs), the 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the 33 Olympic International Sports Federations (IFs) and the TOP partners. The IOC has taken the lead in these efforts – guiding its partners through means such as seminars, manuals and practical tools.

Vancouver 2010 – greenest Games ever

Looking at the Olympic Games, environmentally sustainable benefits that can be applied to host cities and, ideally, elsewhere in the world, need to be ensured. UNEP has become an important partner to Olympic Games Organising Committees in this matter. As the most recent example, the Vancouver organisers and UNEP worked together for three years to improve the environmental footprint of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, which set completely new standards in environmental protection and will be remembered as the greenest Games ever.

For instance, every venue was built according to Canada’s green-building standards; rain was captured to irrigate landscaping; heat was captured from used bath water; nearly 70 per cent of the heating for the Olympic Village came from waste heat recovery systems, including heat from sewage; and transportation improvements reduced emissions and encouraged the use of mass transit, bicycling and other alternatives to commuting by cars.

Reaching out to young people

Raising awareness for environmental protection among the young generation is at least as important as tangible projects. The Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will be held for the first time in Singapore in August 2010, will bring together more than 3,600 athletes between the ages of 14 and 18. Alongside the competitions, all the young athletes will participate in a Culture and Education Programme, which will make them aware of their roles as responsible global citizens. They will also take part in environment-related activities, including hands-on activities in gardens, workshops on sustainable water management, and interactive displays on threats to our natural ecosystem.

Snapshot: recent actions on the ground

Looking at grassroots level, it is a reality that worldwide sport is regularly used as a tool to ensure environmental sustainability, which is the seventh UN Millennium Development Goal. For instance, the IOC has supported UNEP-inspired projects in Kenya which are particularly benefiting young people in the slum areas of Nairobi. Sports equipment and kits for cleaning the settlements have been provided to hundreds of youngsters who have signed up for inter-state competitions and environmental activities which aim at creating dialogue and friendship across community divides.

Another example for action comes from the NOC for Slovenia which launched a nation-wide, voluntary action, “Let’s Clean Slovenia”, on 17 April. Slovenian sport currently uses its reach to implement the largest environmental action in the country’s history, including the production of the first digital register of illegal waste dumps in the country, the removal of at least 20,000 tons of illegally dumped waste and the education of the general public about waste management.

About World Environment Day

World Environment Day 2010 is initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and aims to be the biggest, most widely celebrated, global day for positive, environmental action. Commemorated on 5 June since 1972, this day is one of the principal vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. It is about mobilising individual as well as organised action and advocating partnerships among different stakeholders.

Learn more about this day and how you can contribute on http://www.unep.org/wed/2010/english/ . This year, you can share your activities with UNEP and it will publicise them on a world map on their website.

Success stories, partnerships and future action

Success stories, partnerships and future action for a sustainable environment were at the centre of the 7th World Conference on Sport and the Environment, which was held in Beijing from 25 to 27 October. Under the motto "From Plan to Action", 400 participants from all over the world - representing sport organisations, sponsors, sports event organisers, NGOs, industry, UN bodies, national and municipal governments and research institutions - worked together to share knowledge, discuss best practice and find progressive solutions for environmental challenges.

Countdown to Beijing 2008

On the subject of the next Olympic Games, the conference dedicated an entire session to Beijing 2008. The first independent "Environmental Review" of an Olympic Games was presented by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), a long-standing partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The review acknowledges the significant investment – more than US$12 billion - and achievements in the field of environment by the Chinese organisers, and gives recommendations on how to advance further in the run-up to the Games. NGOs and industry representatives explained how they are supporting the Beijing organisers towards achieving "Green Games". And the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Organising Committee (BOCOG) presented its publication "Beijing 2008: Environmental Protection, Innovation and Improvement", showing the concrete measures it wants to implement to ensure a long-lasting "green" legacy for Beijing and China.

World Conference as a unique platform for knowledge exchange

The 7th edition of this event proved to be a unique platform for knowledge exchange. Where else do cities like Incheon, Glasgow, Delhi and Abuji get to exchange information with South Africa, host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, about environment initiatives for major sport events? Where else would you get handbooks and brochures on grassroots sustainability projects in Southern America, Africa and Oceania? And where else could the environmental experts of all the future Olympic Games Organising Committees meet to discuss their environmental policies with NGOs and researchers? This is just to name a few examples which reveal the potential of this conference.

Commitment for action on a daily basis

"Sport, and in particular our athletes, need a healthy environment, but sport also needs to contribute to a sustainable environment, for example in the context of Olympic Games. Beyond this conference, there are many opportunities for different forms of collaboration at all levels. We all have to play our part in the global effort for a sustainable environment, in the global fight against climate change – that means everybody, everyday" concluded Pál Schmitt, IOC member and Chairman of the IOC Sport and Environment Commission, at the end of the two-day conference. A reminder of this appeal is an official communiqué which was adopted unanimously by all attendants. Practical tools for the promotion of a healthy environment, such as the IOC's Guide on Sport, Environment and Sustainability, and a lot of other useful information brought in by the participants, are in the suitcases of the participants to be shared with their colleagues back home. And in spring 2009, at the next World Conference on Sport and the Environment in Vancouver, it will be time to review what has "grown green" since the Beijing conference.

The young speakers come from all different parts of the world, namely from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Australia, India and Canada.

Playing for a Greener Future

Under the motto “Playing for a Greener Future”, the Conference is being organised by the IOC in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Qatar Olympic Committee. Conference delegates will have the opportunity to actively support the Conference motto there and then: they will be able to contribute during the public comment period on the final draft of the Event Organisers Sector Supplement, add their own public commentary to the new Event Sector Supplement led by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and make their own environmental pledge to care for our planet on the Green Wall Banner. In line with the event objectives, the organisers have committed to a paperless Conference and it is planned to broadcast all Conference sessions live via digital media.

Learn more about the programme and the keynote speakers here.

Items on the agenda, which will be addressed in plenary and breakout sessions, include:

How sport can contribute to the 2012 Rio +20 Earth Summit

What are you expecting from the Nairobi Conference?

This is a regular but very important event on the calendar of world sport and environment. It is a good opportunity to bring together the three pillars of the Olympic Movement - the International Olympic Committee, the International Federations and the National Olympic Committees and to exchange views on what has been done so far on sport and the environment, review achievements and plan for the future. It is a good opportunity for the organising committees of the Olympic Games to explain their plans in this field. When you host the Olympic Games, among the main priorities must be the protection of the environment.

The world is now suffering too frequently from natural disasters such as the tsunami disaster last year, hurricane Katrina and floods in Europe have shown. Can sport contribute to sensitise governments and people on attitudes to be changed?

Sport is not an activity which damages nature too much, but our message can reach millions young people and the general public. It therefore becomes easier to draw their attention to the beauty of nature and we can educate them and raise their awareness to the danger of environmental degradation. Greening the Games is a real message.

Is the organisation of a mega event like the Olympic Games compatible with a serious policy on sustainable development?

An event like the Olympic Games is an excellent opportunity for setting examples and for education. The Olympic Movement’s Agenda 21 is an essential and important document in this regard. Sustainability was a new word for me, when I became chairman of the commission. I also had to learn the message. It is a moral and ethical obligation for mankind to take out from nature today only what we need for this generation so that the next generation may also enjoy the resources.

Q. What is your favourite example of a successful application of the IOC policy on sustainable development?

All the processes of organising mega events involve planning, construction, management and maintainance of sports facilities. Green control has been implemented in all phases; some sports events draw hundreds of thousands of visitors and they can leave tons of garbage behind. Educating visitors brings results. And we have seen this being implemented time and again at Olympic Games. The Organising Committees have left behind environmental legacies that cities and countries would not have undertaken, or would have taken long to implement were it not for the Games.

What are the next steps the IOC has to undertake in order to succeed in this field of activity?

This conference is not only about protecting nature and sustainability, but also to show how essential the environment is to maintain peace. It is a new element in our conferences. It has repeatedly been said that if ever there will be a third world war, hopefully never, it would be for the possession of clean water or sources of energy or other natural sources. Without peace, there is no reason to protect the nature.

Along with Al Gore and five other prominent environmental leaders, Rogge will be presented with the award at a special ceremony on 19 April in Singapore.

“I am very honoured to receive this award, which is a great recognition of the IOC’s responsibility and commitment to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable development in sport,” said Rogge.

“Since the early 90s, the IOC and the Olympic Movement have progressively taken the environment and sustainability into account throughout the lifecycle of an Olympic Games project. The ‘Green Games’ concept is increasingly a reality. Today, from the beginning of a city’s desire to stage an Olympic Games, through to the long-term impact of those Games, environmental protection and, more importantly, sustainability, are prime elements of Games planning and operations. I am very proud of this and would like to thank UNEP for recognising these efforts,” he added.

The Olympic Games are above all about sport and the athletes, but they can bring several important environmental outcomes if they are planned, managed and conducted in a way which minimises the adverse environmental impacts and effects.

The opportunity of the Games can also be used to provide sustainable environmental legacies, such as rehabilitated and revitalised sites, increased environmental awareness, and improved environmental policies and practices. They can further encourage and facilitate strong environmental actions, and technology and product development in a city, country and beyond, through the educational value of good example.

Further information on the IOC’s activities in the area of sustainable development, including the IOC Sport and Environment Commission and Agenda 21 can be found on our website:

Promotion of sustainable development

Torino 2006

A shining example of the IOC’s work with the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games was last year’s Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

Among the key sustainability initiatives, which can be highlighted, and which have been independently certified in a report on Torino 2006, are the compensation of greenhouse gas emissions, waste minimisation and important achievements in areas from conservation of fresh water and mountain ecosystems to transport and eco-friendly building designs.

The work covered in the report on Torino 2006 also recognises the adoption of environmental certification and management standards like EMAS (the European Eco Management & Audit Scheme) and ISO 14001 and the adoption of Eco-labels by hotels and Olympic accommodation.

The Torino 2006 Organising Committee received the 2004 and 2005 EMAS - ECOLABEL (the European Union Eco Label) Award in recognition of its competencies in organising a sports event which had the highest respect for the environment, as well as the 2006 ECOLABEL Award for the University Media Village, which was a great example of TOROC’s commitment to environmental improvements.

Beijing 2008

The environmental challenges for the Beijing Games in 2008 are arguably greater than for any previous Games given the context of China’s rapid development and the impact it has.

Beyond the 16 days of competition, it is the IOC’s hope that practices, as well as agreements with third parties (e.g. Memorandum of Understanding with UNEP) will have at least a degree of positive impact in the wider context of environmental sustainability.

This is a matter that will be debated in full at the 7th World Conference on Sport and the Environment, which will run from 25 to 27 October 2007 in Beijing.

BOCOG has already received ISO14001 certification for its environmental management system, and it has issued environmental guidelines for Olympic project construction/renovation, Olympic catering services, accommodation, marketing, and large-scale events.

Furthermore, and in association with the local authorities, there has been a large amount of work carried out in the areas of environmental education, improving air quality, water treatment, forestation and waste management.

Beijing 2008 is also conducting, along with Vancouver 2010 and London 2012, the Olympic Games Global Impact (OGGI) study, launched by the IOC, in order to help its partners understand the impact of the edition of the Games which they have been elected to host. The early dissemination of OGGI documentation by the IOC means that today bidding cities have enlarged their scope and responsibility to encompass not only environmental concerns and initiatives, but have also incorporated sustainable development as a vision and objective which underpins their entire project.

About the Champion of the Earth Awards

Presented for the third time, the Champion of the Earth Awards recognise prominent and inspirational environmental leaders from each region of the world, who, through their leadership, vision and creativity, have made an impact at the policy level.

The plan demonstrates how the company is using the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games as a forum to showcase its ”Olympic Games Sustainability Programme” and its ongoing environmental commitments.

The Programme was created through consultation with WWF-Canada and the David Suzuki Foundation, and includes targets of 100% collection of all PET containers in the Olympic Village and the venues during the Games, and 100% reduction in Olympic carbon emissions.

Live positively and run with the Torch
Coca-Cola is also rewarding Canadians who Live Positively and reduce their environmental footprint, by providing them with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to carry the Olympic torch in the build-up to the Games. Any Canadian who increases the amount they recycle, conserves energy and water and/or sets examples of environmental sustainability, can nominate themselves to become an Olympic torchbearer by logging on to www.icoke.ca.

Coca-Cola has announced that Gerald Butts, President and CEO, WWF-Canada has been nominated by Coca-Cola as its first environmental Olympic torchbearer. He said: “We are excited by Coke’s commitment to introducing an Olympic Games Sustainability Programme at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and by its efforts to support Canadians in living more sustainable lives."

“Congratulations to Coca-Cola,” says Linda Coady, Vice President, Sustainability, VANOC. “This is an example of a business using its Olympic sponsorship to incorporate and highlight environmental innovation in its own practices.”
