Torch of the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Games

©IOC

This torch is made up of three main materials: silver, copper and, for the first time, glass. The flame shoots up through a frosted glass opening, which allows an interesting parallel to be drawn with the Games’ motto: “Light the Fire Within”. Indeed, the flame that we see burning behind the glass symbolises the fire that burns within each torchbearer. In addition, the copper and the glass undergo a transformation when the flame is lit, which gives each torch a unique sheen.

It is interesting to note that each element that makes up this torch has its own meaning. The glass, through its lightness, recalls ice and snow. The old silver is a nod to the American West and its streaming waters. Finally, the copper recalls fire, the passion and industrial history of Utah.
