The final runner in the Torch Relay, Günter Zahn (the German 1,500m junior champion), was escorted by runners from the other four continents: America (Jim Ryun), Asia (Kenji Kimihara), Africa (Kipchoge Keino) and Oceania (Derek Clayton). In this way, the whole planet was symbolically represented at the Opening Ceremony. But it was Günther Zahn alone who had the honour of lighting the cauldron with his torch.
