Torch of the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games

This torch, which was designed by a team of engineers from St Petersburg, was used for the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games. This edition of the Games remains memorable owing to the call to boycott them by US President Jimmy Carter to protest against the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union in 1979. In the end, 80 countries took part in the Moscow Games – the lowest level of participation since 1956. Despite this, these Games still provided sports performances that entered Olympic history.
