For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the Olympic Charter was not respected on two specific points: unity of both time and place. The Olympic Games did indeed take place in Melbourne (Australia) from 22 November to 8 December 1956, but the equestrian events were moved to Stockholm (Sweden) and held from 10 to 17 June 1956. The reason for this move was very simple: an Australian law imposing six months of quarantine on all horses entering the country, which did not allow the equestrian events to be held in Melbourne. Therefore, the Games took place on two different continents and at two different times (June and November/December).
