The Torch Relay for the Games in Lake Placid, symbolised by the torch above (the work of designer Don McFarland), covered a distance of 12,824 km. Of this, the 1,600 km on US territory were covered by 52 runners. This was a highly symbolic figure: the 26 men and 26 women were chosen to represent each US state, together with a representative of the District of Columbia and another for the town of Lake Placid. Each torchbearer carried the torch many times on the 1,600km of the relay route.
