It was for the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games that the first relay in Olympic history was organised. The itinerary took it through Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany. The idea of this relay came from Carl Diem (1882-1962), Secretary General of the Organising Committee for these Games. In addition, the torch design was based on picture of ancient ceramics drawn by Carl Diem
