This curved torch recalls a scroll of paper: this invention progressively spread worldwide following the Silk Road. Furthermore, the route of the Olympic Torch Relay for the Beijing Games retraced this mythical Road.
The keen observer will have undoubtedly noticed a spiral motif on the upper part of the torch. This motif is a very old decorative element in China: these are “lucky clouds”, traditionally announcing joy and prosperity. In addition, the handle of the torch is made in one of the most Chinese of colours: the red lacquer of China. This colour, present on many lacquered items, also symbolises the spirit of celebration and enthusiasm. But its top virtue is to attract luck.
