This coat was part of the costume worn by the drummers who were among the symbolic 2,008 musicians who opened the Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 OG. Made of satin with short sleeves and a high Mao-type collar, this creation from Japanese designer Eiko Ishioka was completed simply by a pair of trousers and high-sided shoes. The drums used were a modern variation of a traditional instrument known as the “fou”.
It is also interesting to note that this Opening Ceremony was orchestrated by Zhang Yimou, the Chinese director known worldwide for his films, which include “Raise the Red Lantern” (1991), “Hero” (2003) and “House of Flying Daggers” (2004).
