Jean Tinguely, "Hockey" (1991)

©IOC

This intriguing sculpture, 220 cm high, 170 cm wide and 175 cm deep, is the work of one of Switzerland’s greatest artists: Jean Tinguely of Fribourg. "Hockey" was produced using a technique for which the artist became well-known: it is a collection of unrelated objects assembled to create a “machine”, which never fails to attract the observer’s attention.

This “machine”, driven by a small electric motor, is made up of the following items: an ice hockey stick which belonged to Jakob Lüdi, signed by the members of the Swiss team which competed in the 1985 World Championships in Fribourg; the wheel of a motorbike used by multiple world champion Stefan Dörflinger (1982 and 1983 in 50cm3, and 1984 and 1985 in 80cm3); the skull of a wild boar shot in the Ardennes by Roger Nellens, a friend of the artist; multi-coloured light bulbs; Christmas tree lights; a vase of dried flowers; and various pieces of metal.
