Between 1977 and 1979, at the request of the great Californian collector, Richard Weisman, Andy Warhol painted, using Polaroid photos, ten of the great sporting stars of the era, including Pelé, Muhammad Ali, OJ Simpson and Chris Evert.
Invited to participate in the “Art and Sport” series of the Sarajevo Olympic Games, the leader of the Pop Art movement drew a speed skater by superposing two images from publicity photographs, in order to express the movement of the athlete.
