Mascots of the 1988 Games in Seoul

A friendly tiger was chosen to represent the Olympic Games in Seoul because this animal is very popular in Korean legends, where it has a reputation for bravery and nobility. Hodori, as he is called, is shown here wearing a traditional bridegroom’s costume, with his female counterpart, Hosumi. The tigers’ names were chosen carefully: in Korean, “ho” means “tiger”, while “dori” means “boy”, and “sumi” may be translated as “girl”.
